Queen - Innuendo Album Cover Art

Queen – The Game

The Game is the eighth studio album by the British rock band Queen. It was released on 30 June 1980 by EMI Records in the UK and by Elektra Records in the US. The Game features a different sound from its predecessor, Jazz (1978). The Game was the first Queen album to use a synthesizer(an Oberheim OB-X).

A critical and commercial success, The Game became the only Queen album to reach No. 1 in the US, and also became their best-selling studio album in the US, with four million copies sold to date, tying with the sales for News of the World. Notable songs on the album include the bass-driven “Another One Bites the Dust” and the rock and roll “Crazy Little Thing Called Love“, both of which reached No. 1 in the US. It was reissued in May 2003 on DVD-Audio with Dolby 5.1 surround sound and DTS 5.1.

The 5.1 mix of “Coming Soon” features an alternate backing track, as the final master tapes could not be found when mixing the album to 5.1.

Tracklist

001 - play the game bass tab

Freddie writes with a very distinct style, he uses borrowed chords and extends phrases with bars of 2/4 as and when he wants or needs to for dramatic effect.

The verses in this song are in C Mixolydian (C - B♭ - Am to Fm) where the Fm chord is a borrowed chord from C minor and it changes the tone, giving things a darker, more wistful feeling that he then resolves into the Chorus as it goes to C Major.

John Deacon's line in this song is melodically and harmonically complementary but also uses some interesting runs to outline movement. Enjoy.

002 - dragon attack bass tab

Nothing here yet, my dude...

003 - another one bites the dust bass tab

This is John Deacon's song. No doubt about that.

A classic bassline (albeit one "influenced" but other songs from that era, it's got funk and swagger all over it and then you add in Roger's driving drums, Brian's Nile Rodgers inspired funk licks and Freddie's inimitable delivery and attitude and you can see why this song is so beloved.

I've transcribed it with stacatto dotted 8th notes which has proven a bit controversial. My reason for doing this is the psychology of the note, the intent. It's longer than an 8th (hence the dot) but shorter than a stacatto quarter note. It has the chopped short weight of the quarter note and the clipped feel of an 8th note but feels kind of inbetween to me...
