The Countdown to Extinction record is mainly played on 4 String Basses. The exceptions that stand out and suggest a 5 string bass are the title track, Countdown to Extinction and Skin O' My Teeth where there's a low D sounded out.

In those instances I've tabbed it out for both 5 string in E Standard and 4 String in Dropped D in case you want to hit that bone shaker D!

Keys and Modes are marked in the track notes below, there's lots of Em, F#m, Am and Bm going on here but there are tracks that use Modes and sometimes something a little spicier like in Foreclosure of a Dream which uses G Dorian among other things.

The tabs for this album are a mix of Bb Standard (Bb-Eb-Ab-Db-Gb), E♭ Standard (E♭-A♭-D♭-G♭), E Standard (E-A-D-G) and Dropped D♭ (for some of the songs I've tabbed for both 4 and 5 string). The tabs are written out "as if" they are in B and E Standard tunings and Dropped D to make them easier to read.

With this in mind, you're going to see a lot of interesting key signatures in here (and some places where there isn't one where you'd expect to see one!). This is because, rather than simply saying, "it's metal, they're playing in 'E', it's E minor..." I've actually gone to some lengths to make sure that the tabs are as clean to read as possible and this means using marking up with Modes.
